Best of 2012! 5 Health Benefits of Orgasm

Since we got lots of love for this article, we're including it as a 2012 favorite!

Big, small, earth shattering: we love them all. I am talking about orgasms of course! Though Orgasm October is over, our whole team is thinking about orgasms. They make us feel amazing, relaxed, re-energized, happy, and sexy. Everyone loves an orgasm! Who doesn't? But, besides those awesome things, orgasms also have some great health benefits. Not only do they feel amazing but here are some ways they improve our health! Our Crimson Love reports.

* * *

Like you ever needed an excuse to want an orgasm? Well, now you do. Below are 5 reasons you must be having orgasms regularly. Whether it's with a partner or alone, orgasms are an excellent way to touch yourself or sex yourself healthy. Anyway you spin it, orgasms are great!

Without adieu, the 5 health benefits of orgasm:

#1 Heart health

When your man cums, take it! Swallowing semen is not only good for your teeth but it is also good for your heart. Semen helps keeps plaque levels low and rigorous sex is also a great cardio workout. Have more sex and more orgasms because it helps keep your heart strong and your teeth healthy.

#2 Stress relief

Ever notice how when you have that big "O" it feels like everything else that stresses you out just melts away? It's because of the chemicals that your brain releases, dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin. They all give you happy, loving feelings. Sex for your stress, anyone?

#3 Pain relief

OK, so admittedly, we did just write an article about how sex can be painful. We hope this isn't the case. If you are experiencing pain in sex, do check out that article. However, if you're experiencing pain in different areas of your body, orgasm can really alleviate that pain.

How? Orgasm works similarly to stress relief when oxytocin, dopamine, and endorphins are released in the body. When these chemicals are released, they increase your tolerance to pain. So, that headache that you have can feel a little better after a nice romp. No more excuses.

#4 Orgasms fight cancer

Regular sexual activity is good for your sexual organs. Regular ejaculation helps keep prostate cancer away. Similarly, regular sexual activity and orgasm is good for the vagina because it helps to keep different uterine conditions at bay. Have more sex to keep your sexual organs healthy!

#5 Better sleep

After your orgasm, your body releases a cocktail of amazing chemicals. One of them is endorphins which not only makes you feel happy but can also have the effect of a sedative. More sex and orgasms for better sleep? Yes, please!

Having orgasms does wonders for the body and for your overall health. So, go ahead have some more.

With love from, GetLusty!

Why Male Orgasm is Different From Ejaculation (NSFW)

Orgasm October is over and Naked November has come and past. Now, Dick & Dildo December is in full swing! We posted some time ago about how to have multiple orgasms for men that raised a good question among our readers. Specifically, one reader noted [of the article], "Seems they just redefine what an orgasm is for men, and go on just to talk about control." Actually, no. Ejaculation and orgasm aren't the same. Today, we're talking about how they're different.

Brendan debunks any misconceptions you appreciated readers may have about about male orgasms and ejaculation! With lots of research, we have some answers to your perplexing question. This is just part two in our series of the male orgasm, so stay tuned for more articles to come. GetLusty's Brendan White reports.

* * *

For many men, orgasms and ejaculation are inextricably combined because ejaculation and orgasms seem to happen at the same time.  While this is the often the case, ejaculation and orgasms don't necessarily have to happen at the same time - and don't with a great deal of men.  Both words refer to two separate events that have some associated causes and effects.  Think of a Venn diagram - there are aspects of each category that are mutual and aspects that are completely separate.

Fleshing out the difference

Before we can dive headlong into the nitty gritty details of male orgasms and ejaculation, it's critical to define the two terms.  The exact definition of an orgasm is heavily contested.  Some clinical definitions are limited to physiology while others extend into the realms of psychology and neurology.  There are rigid definitions that see an orgasm as predominantly physiological: muscular contractions involved during sexual activity, along with changes in heart rate, blood pressure and other factors.  I've also encountered sources that claim orgasms are completely mental while ejaculation is the physical end of things.  While nicely compartmentalizing the two terms, this claim is false!

Orgasm

I believe the most useful definition of an orgasm is somewhere out there in orgasm no-man's land - as a mental state, as a series of physiological and also neurological events.  During an orgasm, brain waves change and certain hormones are released.  Scientific American reports: "Achieving orgasm, brain imaging studies show, involves more than heightened arousal.

It requires a release of inhibitions engineered by shutdown of the brain’s center of vigilance in both sexes and a widespread neural power failure in females."  Orgasms are controlled by the autonomic nervous system, which operates below the level of consciousness and is responsible for other things like heart rate, digestion, respiratory rate, sexual arousal, and more.  This system, when stimulated enough, triggers an orgasm, which in turn queues ejaculation.

Ejaculation

The definition of ejaculation, on the other hand, is far less ambiguous.  Ejaculation is the strictly physical process of ejecting semen from the male reproductory tract.  If you're still skeptical consider this: some men ejaculate before orgasms, some after.  Some men may not ejaculate at all when they orgasm.  It is not uncommon for orgasms from prostate stimulation to be dry and ejaculate-less.  There are also retrograde ejaculations which occur when semen is redirected to the urinary bladder.  Retrograde ejaculations can be one symptom of a larger medical problem so if you think you are having retrograde ejaculations, do yourself a favor and talk to your doctor.

Conclusion

So lets go over what we uncovered today!  Orgasms are total body responses while ejaculations are more isolated physical events.  While the two can in some cases be mutually exclusive, typically an ejaculation follows an orgasm.   Don't be confused - they are different from each other!  Don't you let anyone tell you differently, just point them to GetLusty for Couples for some proper sex indoctrination.

Faking Orgasms? Why & Why Not

Faking an orgasm. Is it ever OK, beneficial and positive? On an editorial note, I'm biased. I believe you should never fake an orgasm. But rather than explain in my own opinion, we'll let Bethany Kibblesmith explain the pro's and con's of faking an orgasm.

* * *

If you’ve ever picked up a “woman’s magazine”, talked sex with a close friend, or seen an episode of “Sex and the City” or "When Harry Met Sally", faking orgasms has likely come up. Magazines often poll their readers often about this, and overwhelmingly readers respond yes. Yes, they’ve faked an orgasm before. In fact, check out the classic scene below detailing Meg Ryan's take on faking orgasms. Meg notes it's the partner who either confirms or denies the fake orgasm.

Rather than talking about a partner's view, we're talking about the person who's faking the orgasm. Now, I have a really strong bias on this issue. I won’t hide how my opinion lies on this one, but I want to fairly present the pros and cons of faking your climax, because this is a complicated issue. There are two sides to the question of faking it, and both should be equally explored.

For the most part, people fall on the side against faking it, but there are pros to stretching your sexual truth. Fake orgasms can do wonders psychologically. You can psyche yourself into an O by pretending you’re actually having one. It can also act as positive feedback for your partner, who can often feel inadequate or unattractive if you have reoccurring difficulty climaxing.

Pro's

Likely, sex does feel good, and by vocalizing in response to the pleasurable stimuli. You’re telling your partner that sex is feeling awesome, and that you value his or her efforts.

It says you are truly enjoying your shared sexual activities, even if the big O is less than genuine. Just because the ending was fake doesn’t make the moans, bites or other sexy responses you have during foreplay and intercourse any less genuine. The orgasm is undeniably part of sex, but that doesn’t lessen the delicious other parts of sex. A fake orgasm can also signal a more natural seeming ending to your sex-having.

Faking your orgasm may also seem like the nicer thing to do. Maybe your sex is hampered by a chaotic, stressful aspect of your life, unrelated to your partner’s actions and your reception of them. Maybe faking it until life calms down and climax comes naturally seems like the best way to get through a rough patch in an otherwise smoking hot sex life. It’s also possible you’re just not feeling especially sexual lately, and while sex feels good, climax isn’t in the cards. It’s no one’s fault, and we’ve all likely been there before.

Con's

This is where the downsides come in. By faking your climax, you aren’t facing or alleviating your difficulties in reaching orgasm. By giving your partner false feedback, you’re putting all kinds of roadblocks in your way. Choosing to fake it is like choosing to give your partner sexual silent treatment. It’s keeping a very important piece of information from the only other person involved in the problem you’re having.

Without communicating the difficulties you’re having, you’re depriving your partner of the opportunity to help you. It also robs you of the chance to learn more about each other sexually, what you like and what feels good to do together. Maybe clitoral stimulation, longer foreplay, a different position or series of position would give you the boost you need to reach orgasm. Your partner can’t read your mind, and faking your orgasm will never improve whatever is preventing you from climaxing.

The other half of my bias against faking it is this: dishonesty is dishonesty, no matter how or why you’re being dishonest.

For me, a fake orgasm is like lying to your partner. It’s hard to say something that will disappoint or hurt your partner, but imagine if you continued having climaxing trouble and come clean after weeks or months. I think you can imagine that’s likely a shitty feeling. If you aren’t communicating your feelings, nothing will get better.

Do Men Fake Orgasms?

Do men fake orgasms? The stereotype is that men (young men especially) can come whenever and wherever they want. But what about those time when an orgasm just will not come? Be it too much alcohol, the side effect of medication, or just plain stress, there are times when even men experience the frustration all women are familiar with: sometimes an orgasm is just not going to happen. When this happens do men fake orgasms or just simply stop having sex? Our newest featured writer, Georgia Knapp, is here to talk about men. Do they fake orgasms? How can we deal with it instead of ignoring it for a better sexual relationship? Read on!

* * *

Is it even possible for a man to fake an orgasm? In short: yes. Men do fake orgasms. A 2010 survey issued by AskMen.com revealed that 30% of male readers had faked an orgasm. When performing a Google search on “do men fake orgasms?” a How To article was found, instructing men on the perfect way to fake their orgasmic finish (note: it is more believable when wearing a condom).

When interviewing male friends, nearly all said that they had “definitely” faked an orgasm with their partner. The one who said he never faked an orgasm stated that when he could not ejaculate he just admitted this to his partner – as long as the woman was happy, he was happy! Although the reasons for each delayed ejaculation (DE) varies from man to man, the reason for each fake out remains constant: to not wound their partner’s pride. The frequency of fake ejaculations in relationships vs casual hook-ups seems to be split down the middle. Some men said that they feel more pressure to please their girlfriend/wife and therefore have faked an orgasm many times so that their partner, “does not feel like she did anything wrong.” Other guys stated that they have pretended to come more often with a casual hook-up because they, “don’t care as much.”

So is it the lack of attraction or emotional connection to one’s partner that inhibits men from ejaculating? The general consensus is ‘no’. Instead it is the frequency of sex in a single day, stress, and alcohol that has a greater effect. One man even stated, “Even if the sex is awful, you can still come.”

An orgasm is the “sudden discharge of accumulated sexual tension...resulting in rhythmic muscular contractions in the pelvic region characterized by an intense sensation of pleasure.” It is a part of the autonomic nervous system (or visceral/involuntary nervous system), which functions primarily below the level of consciousness. In short, the inability to orgasm is the old “it’s not you, it’s me” excuse, but for real. Although anorgasmia (the inability to have an orgasm) is significantly more common in women than in men, doctors have noticed an increase in DE over the past several years. Much of this is can be related to stress from the economy, unemployment rates, and the increase of porn. DE can also be the result of medication or poor health.

So which is worse: for a man to fake an orgasm or a woman? Society teaches us that men can ejaculate so easily that for them to not have an orgasm during sex must mean something is drastically wrong. The reality is, it’s not that big of a deal. Sometimes men just cannot come no matter how much they may want to. This is not a reaction to the quality of the sex, partner, or the relationship. Sometimes, just like with women, a man’s visceral nervous system just says, “Sorry, buddy, not tonight.”

Our next articles will cover more areas on why you shouldn't fake orgasm, ladies and gents. We'll also cover what to do when you learn they've faked it. How do you talk about your orgasm in an open environment? Suffice to say, we recommend talking before, during and after sex. Communication is key for successful sexual relationships.

Ladies! 6 Reasons You Can't Climax

We've all been there. You can't climax in the moment and feeling really helpless. I'm sure many women you know have also had the same problem at some point. It's completely normal, but why does it happen? Knowing why could get you closer to orgasming in the future. GetLusty's Bethany Kibblesmith is here presenting research on why you aren't climaxing.

Disclaimer: This is not intended to be medical advice. As the article notes, if you're having physiological or psychological issues hindering your orgasm, we recommend seeing a physician. Whether it's a psychotherapist or your primary physician, it's important to understand both why you're having problems as well as how you can start orgasming. Have specific questions? Feel free to send it to reply@getlusty.com, and we'll send them over to the therapists or sexologists in our network to get answers.

* * *

You’re having sex, getting oral or being manually stimulated. It’s feeling amazing and you can feel your climax just out of reach. Try as you might, you can’t manage to seal the deal. In fact, the harder you try to orgasm, the more impossible climaxing becomes. You want to come. You’re having sex. So what gives?

Well, there are a couple of things that could be going on. First, if this is the only thing you take away from this article, I’ll be happy. Okay, ready? Know this above all else: it’s not your fault, you aren’t a failure, and absolutely nothing is wrong with you. Same goes for your partner.

So, there are two basic categories of things that are likely culprits hindering your climax. Something is going on, either in your brain or in your body. First, cover brain stuff first. Stress, distractions, and simple mental blocks. Next, we'll cover issues with your body.

Brain issues (psychology)

#1 Stress

Stress is a total buzzkill in every aspect of life, and the poor orgasm is no different. If work or school or family is killer lately, and your time spent with your lover has you showing up zombie-like, drained, and flopping into bed or maybe it has your heart thumbing like a techno beat and your muscles are tight as an E-string, it’s not surprising that your O has become elusive.

Your stressful situation stays where you leave it. Don’t bring it into the bedroom, kitchen, living room or shower... Anyhow, the point is, focus on the matter at hand. Your attention should be on your body and your partner, and all the yummy sensations you’re sharing. If you really can’t shrug off the stress, consider taking a booty break until your stressful situation eases up. If sex is uncomfortable or feeling like something you’re doing to because you know your partner wants to, this is probably the best solution for your stress.

#2 Distractions

Distractions can also act on your ability to come, just like stress. Thinking about how loud the TV is in the other room and wishing you hadn’t forgotten to turn it off, or how you really should be doing the dishes, and crap, weren’t you supposed to call your friend back about Friday night? Or maybe it’s too dang cold, why is it so hot in here, have these sheets always been so rough? Slow down, girlie. Worrying about all the other things you also have to get done while you’re supposed to be getting down, uncomfortable conditions or temperatures, can make it impossible to focus on the physical and zone out mentally, both ideal for climax.

#3 Simple mental blocks: distrust

How you’re feeling about your partner is critical for comfortable sex. Have you been fighting, or nagging each other? Is there something you aren’t telling your partner about?

Anything you’ve buried, or left unresolved can cause you anxiety, emotional stress, and make you feel emotionally distant or disconnected from your partner. It goes without saying that these things make it harder to enter a state of vulnerability and openness that orgasm entails. A good relationship is always built on trust.

The other brain based thing that might be the culprit of your climax problems is how you’re feeling about your O. The critical moment is building, and you start thinking “I’m gonna come. Last time I didn’t but this time, it’s gonna happen. Oh, I’m close, why isn’t it happening? What’s going on? Ugh! Lost it! Again!?” Just know that not having one means doesn't mean never having one ever again. When it comes to brain-based orgasm blocks, just remember to relax, talk about your feelings and needs, and relax!

Now, if you read this next section and identify with any part of it, please see a medical doctor. I am an English major, not a medical professional. None of this is meant to constitute medical diagnosis or advice.

Physiologically, there are other reasons you may be having difficulty climaxing. The main culprits are injury or medications, but a physiological response to a psychological issue is also possible.

Physiological issues (your body)

#4 Medications

Have you recently gone on any new medications? Certain anti-depressants and anxiety medications, specifically SSRIs, and forms hormonal birth control, and most common oral contraceptives make climax difficult or impossible. Those medications can also lower your sex drive considerably. Talk with your doctor if this is the case, and determine whether a different medication would better suit your body and life. A word on recreational drug use: opiates and marijuana may dampen your libido and make orgasm more difficult to achieve. Opiates especially are associated with lack of sexual desire, and many prescription painkillers fall into this category. If this could be your problem, consider getting medical help.

#5 Injury (such as childbirth)

Any damage to your nervous system, especially damage to your spinal nerves, can cause a loss of physical ability to feel various sensations. Have you received any physical trauma recently? The other main physical issue is that of the pelvic floor. Are you experiencing pelvic floor issues, such as incontinence or excessive tightness?

Hip and back problems, as well as obesity and pregnancy/childbirth, can cause pelvic floor dysfunctions, which can make sex impossible or painful in the case of excess tightness, or uncomfortable and lacking in sensation in the case of looseness. Kegels and certain yoga poses can help, but always consult a physician if you think something is going on in your body.

#6 Trauma

This one straddles the psychological and physiological categories, but traumatic or negative sexual experiences. Even many years prior to your current sexual difficulties can unexpectedly impact how you relate sexually to your partner.

The effects of sexual abuse, an abusive relationship, or even a consensual encounter that had some sort of negative aspect or association, can all impact your sexuality, at any time. This is a completely normal response.

The body and mind in tandem can sometimes cause, in the most severe psychological reaction, vaginal muscles to become very tense and seize up, making penetration either very painful or impossible. Less obvious reactions to sex in the case of a negative sexual association can be a disconnected feeling to the body, inability to climax, and feelings of fear, guilt or aversion to sexual activities.

Whatever is causing your difficulties in climaxing, you’re a beautiful person who deserves awesome sex. If you keep relaxing, talking to your partner, trying and confronting your difficulties head on, you will orgasm! Stay tuned to GetLusty, as we'll have ideas especially for those of you who are having difficulties climaxing.

Ladies! 5 Ways to Orgasm More Intensely

We've written lots of articles on orgasms. We even dedicated October to Orgasms. about how to give intense orgasms. So what can be better than orgasming? Making those orgasms over the top. If you are already having great orgasms, here are a few steps you can take to make them even better. GetLusty staff writer, Milan Weasley reports.

* * *

This article is very important for all the ladies out there. Have you ever been in a place where your orgasms aren't amazing? Try these ideas on for size! Without ado, 5 ways to orgasm more intensely.

#1 Kegels

Work out your kegel muscles. The stronger these muscles are, the more sensitive you will be vaginally, during intercourse. They increase circulation in your genital area. Your kegel muscles or pubococcygeus muscles (PC) include your clitoris, G-spot, and even some areas of your thighs. You can locate these muscles by squeezing to stop the flow of urination.

Empty your bladder and start to squeeze and hold these muscles. Squeezing in short pulses and longer intervals will strengthen the muscles. Remember don't preform these exercises while urinating. Repeatedly stoping the flow can cause reflux, and send urine back up your urethra. I recommend doing these exercises every time you finish using the bathroom. With discipline you can strengthen these muscles so much you may be able to orgasm by flexing them.

#2 Breathe

We love Kegels so much, we wrote an entire article on how to do Kegels, and also Kegel toys. Breathing brings more oxygen into your bloodstream. Consciously, controlling your breathing will immediately enhance your sexual experiences. Controlling your breathing soothes tension and brings more life and energy to your cells.

Panting promotes arousal and sexual excitability. Pant from your stomach, not your throat. Sometimes, this just happens involuntarily -- but make it a point to focus on your breathe. Breathing in through your mouth and out through your nose slows the build of erotic sensation. Curl your tongue or press it against the roof of your mouth. Breathe in and hold your breath. Exhale through your nose. It's also a cooling breath.

#3 Anticipate

Orgasms aren't all about the finish line. The journey is just as important. The more anticipation that is built up on the road to orgasm, the bigger the release. It slows and stretches things out. Either way you work this, both parties will have the chance to build anticipation. Tension orgasms are shorter and less intense. It involves holding your breath and squeezing/tensing your muscles. When you relax and make the road to orgasm last longer, the end will be a more intense, bigger, and longer release.

This anticipation doesn't begin and end in the bedroom. Send each other erotic pictures. Describe what you want in text messages. Set up a surprise homemade dinner or bubble bath to soak in. You can build anticipation during sex. Get to the brink of orgasm and switch positions. The tension will build up and it has to be released. That orgasmic release will get bigger the more you delay it.

#4 Explore

There are areas on a woman's body that are also sensitive before and during sex. In the lips, tongue, neck, and shoulders there are millions of nerve endings. They are very sensitive to touching and kissing. There are erogenous zones all over a woman's body. Trying new positions will up the pleasure. And even new locations. Having sex in 'dangerous' places or in thrill-seeking ways will release dopamine-which is also released during orgasm. So adding more increases the intensity. Even in a different room in your living space!

Let your partner whisper in your ears. The ears are a link straight to one of the body's most sensitive areas during stimulation, the brain. Gently blowing on the ears will send shivers down your spine. The neck is just as sensitive. Light kisses and bites will be just as exciting.

Your scalp is sensitive as well. Each strand of hair is attached to it by a nerve ending. Meaning there are thousands of opportunities to deliver more stimulation.

And during orgasm, let your partner gently pull your hair. Pulling your hair surprisingly releases endorphins, which will increase your orgasm.

#5 Relax

Your mind is the first thing to relax. Don't focus on delivering mind blowing orgasms. The pressure can be overwhelming. Especially if you aren't successful. Performance anxiety can exist in the bedroom and can lead to all types of problems. Relaxation is the solution to stress. The focus should be on your connection with your partner. Focus on the passion of your love and your attraction. Relaxation will make both of your bodies better able to orgasm.

You can have all the tricks in the world, but if your thoughts are elsewhere and you aren't relaxed, you won't be able to orgasm. Communication during sex can help with relaxing also. If you don't trust your partner, or vice versa, you won't be completely open. Keep the lines of communication open. Giving your body to your partner, includes giving your mind and trust just as much. Focus on the moment and not on other activities. We even have tips on staying in the moment sexually!

In 2 Days! Ladies Night Out: Exploring Female Orgasm

Just 1 day left to register! After our chat with Cheryl Sloane of G Boutique, we got a call from Michelle Herzog, MSMFT about her upcoming event at G Boutique. We were already set to feature the event and now there's even more of a reason. Michelle Herzog explains more why she's leading an event on female orgasm and why you must attend! RSVP directly here.

Female Orgasm: It’s About the Journey, Not the Destination.

Female orgasm is something I have become very passionate about in the past few months. In preparation for a workshop I am giving in early November at G Boutique in Chicago, I began researching the female orgasm and all of its glory. What did I find? A Lot.

As a clinician, I see a variety of people who experience difficulty with intercourse and orgasm. In the U.S., we are taught a traditional model of intercourse, which frames sex as an activity and orgasm as the final goal. Think of this model as a game.

A game with a beginning, middle and end. Maybe a little bit of foreplay to start the game off right, throw in some intercourse when the players are ready, and by the end, everyone orgasms and calls it a night. Sound familiar?

It is my belief that how we feel and treat our sex lives should not be based on a standard (and very limited) way of thinking. Sex is fluid and different for everyone. Whether you orgasm or not, experiencing pleasure and connection with your partner or on your own can be a very powerful part of your sexual journey. I believe people can have fulfilling and amazing sex lives without the pressure of orgasm hanging over their heads. This is hard for people to hear because of how we are socialized to think about sex. Being open to new ways of thinking about and exploring sex are the first steps towards new levels of pleasure and excitement in the bedroom.

In my upcoming workshop, I will be inviting women to think outside the traditional box of what sex “should” look like. I will be educating about the different aspects of female orgasm, including the G-Spot and female ejaculation. Other topics include masturbation, mindful sex and orgasm-inducing techniques. Cheryl Sloane, the owner of G Boutique, will be demonstrating and educating about orgasm friendly products throughout the presentation. This is sure to be a fun and female friendly night out! More details can be found below.

Where: G Boutique 2131 N. Damen Ave. Chicago
When: Monday, November 5th at 7:15pm
Cost: $20.00
RSVP: Registration required. Please visit here to RSVP.

Can I Be Multi-Orgasmic Again?

It's Orgasm October, so we've received several great questions particularly on orgasm. Occasionally, we get questions from readers that need special attention. This question was asked to us recently and we thought this might have happened to others in our audience. Moushumi Ghose, the Los Angeles Sex Therapist and our resident lady-who-knows-all is here to answer our readers' question.

* * *

Dear GetLusty,

I used to be multi-orgasmic. Now find I come once every great while. It's caused me a lot of frustration, stress, and heartache.

I love my partner and we've tried to communicate, try new positions, and do things differently to see if we can find the elusive bugger.

But it seems to simply be impossible for me anymore and my sex desire is definitely suffering after four years of this frustration. I will try to explore with more curiosity, but is there a possibility that I'm somehow physically "damaged"?

The reason I ask is I can hardly ever find an orgasm even during masturbation now! This all happened after having the Mirena IUD inserted, (and remains a problem after having it removed). When I first got the IUD it pinched the hell out of my insides every time I came, and that's about when I stopped coming. After its removal I was able to orgasm again, occasionally. But never with the power or consistency of before. I'm not seeing any conversation about this anywhere online--it concerns me because they are really "pushing" that device on women--even after I had it removed they continue to ask if I want a new one. I asked my doctor whether it could have affected my Os, and he brushed off the question after flushing red with embarrassment. Have you heard of this?

Signed,
Hoping for more

Dear Hoping for more,

This is a great question. I am not a medical doctor, but from a psychological standpoint it is absolutely possible that your experience with the IUD has remained in your mental muscle memory. For example, you mention that you experienced feeling pinched when you orgasm’d and despite having removed it, you haven’t been able to return. In psychological terms we call this trauma.

The trauma of being pinched becomes a part of your past experience and now may be a psychological block to orgasming. You may be, unconsciously of course, afraid of the pain. Now this is, only, one theory. If there is some medical issue, a doctor would need to check it out. Since your doctor was embarrassed, I would recommend getting a second opinion to rule out any medical condition. Then, if this is indeed psychological, you can start to repair your brain. Trying new positions is one way, but you really need to feel safe and relaxed again.

Without those two components you are not going to orgasm. You also need to reconnect with your body. Practice breathing, is my first suggestion. Close your eyes and take 3 long deep inhales and exhales. Do this regularly throughout your day, when you’re at a stop light, at your desk, etc. Checking in with your breathing is the first step to becoming more in tune with what's going on inside your body.

My next suggestion is to, instead of trying new positions, try more sensual exercises that involve touch, massage, taking a bath, lightening candles, using scented oils, etc and involve the other senses such as smell, taste, and get reacquainted with all the things that bring you pleasure.

You can do these alone or with a partner. Also, putting less emphasis on orgasm, and more emphasis on the other aspects of love making is a good idea. Such as kissing, hugging, touching. Pay attention to how all of these sensations feel. Go slow, make your goal to feel pleasure, not to achieve orgasm, and you might be on your way to healing your inner pain.

Good luck,
Mou

4 Tips for Making Sex Amazing (Without the O)

It's getting toward the end of Orgasm October. We've talked a lot about orgasms. Having different kinds of female orgasms, surprise female orgasms, male multiple orgasms and beyond. It's totally normal to equate a really intense orgasm with great sex. What if we didn't have an orgasm? Tia Champagne is here again to talk about orgasms (or lack there-of) during sex.

* * *

Like many other contributors have already mentioned, achieving orgasm between 2 partners in a relationship requires some practice, communication, and trust. There has to be mental and physical arousal for the body to really finish what could be the highlight of sexual intercourse. However, who said having an orgasm means good sex? Not me.

We all know the definition of sex. Whether it includes oral, anal, or purely penetration, but how many of us really know what good sex is? And does good sex mean having a more than happy, but orgasmic ending? What I'll explain here is not necessarily. When it doesn't, it's not the be-all-and-end all of sex. In fact, it can be an extremely satisfying experience.

Below are 4 tips to feel fully satisfied (and amazing) without reaching orgasm.

#1 Drop the expectations

Having wonderful sex isn't just about having clitoral or other orgasm. Don’t have sex expecting to orgasm. Sometimes, our expectations only lead to disappointment.

You know that cliché quote that says something about life being a journey, not a destination? Well, think of orgasm in that way. If it happens, it happens. But what happens on the way is super important too. Enjoy your time together--be intimate and open. At times, your orgasm will happen. Other times, you might just learn a thing or two about your partner you might not have known otherwise.

#2 Don't be afraid of quickies

For some women, a quickie could be a great time--with or without orgasm. The spontaneity, the rush, and sometimes, the funny awkwardness of it all could be the best sex you’ve had. On the other hand, some women prefer to take an hour--half of that for foreplay and the other for just intercourse. Take the time, even if your partner has a raging boner, to explore each other. If he’s impatient and needs his kick, tease him. Don’t let him get it until you’re ready, too. Teasing doesn’t necessarily have to start before sex—it can also happen during. Moral of this story? Enjoy what’s going on in the moment and don’t focus too hard on what could happen later.

#3 Focus on the fun

When you’re not expecting to orgasm, sometimes you focus on the new tricks you want to try. Backwards cowgirl could be uncomfortable at first for a lot of women.

Maybe the penis is hitting the cervix too deeply. She might feel weird with her anus in his face, or maybe her legs aren’t long enough to get that full bounce.

Either way, when you’re not expecting an orgasm, you’re more likely to change up your routine to learn what other positions turn you on. Taking a little time out to focus on the newness of it all could actually be the best thing you and your partner ever did.

#4 Use your six senses

While doing it, do a little bit more. Don’t just focus on your vagina or his penis. Bite his ears, suck his nipples, smell his hair. Using your six senses could arouse you in a different way than stimulating your clitoris. Watch his penis slide in and out of you. All of a sudden, your partner is your own personal porn star! Allow yourself to watch, listen and feel what’s going on with both of your bodies and not just between the legs.

Overall, orgasm is wonderful. And just one more time for fun-sies, orgasms do make sex a great experience. But sex can also be great without it.

4 Ways to Start Meditating for Better Sex

Meditation seems to be a huge trend right now in the celebrity world with Orlando Bloom and Gisele Bundchen claiming to meditate. But its more than a mere fad. Meditation, like yoga, is thousands of years old! Its healing properties such as reducing stress and bringing about more mental well-being should have everyone meditating! But lets face it: meditation can be scary and intimidating. But, what if I told you that mediation can actually help you reach orgasms? Would you start chanting and making the sound of "om" more? Our Lora Swarts reports on how to get started with meditation!

* * *

According to researchers at Brown University in Rhode Island, women who are able to train their mind and thoughts during sex will experience more pleasure. The study followed 44 students: 30 of whom were women and half of whom had taken a 12 week meditation course. The participants were shown a slideshow of erotic images. When asked to describe their reaction as calm, anxious or aroused, the women who were mediating already registered more quickly as feeling aroused. Meditation allows us to feel more and not get caught up in our own thoughts. When we focus on "feeling" more then we may have a higher chance of orgasming quicker as opposed to letting ourselves get caught up in our heads.

Along with my yoga practice, I love to mediate. Even if its for 10 minutes a day, I always feel more serene, calm, and have more gratitude. Mediation can lead to self-love, body awareness and more attention span all of which can help you with reaching an orgasm! Although orgasms shouldn't be the end goal of sex (that is just too much pressure on a person), it sure is nice to know that meditation can help us reach them! We have already written on some yoga poses to help you have better sex, now its time for some delicious meditation to improve our sex lives!

#1 Quiet environment

First things first. Be sure to find a comfortable and quiet spot in your home, office, gym, wherever! In order to really go inside you need space and lots of quiet. Do not rush the meditation process. Start with 10-15 minutes and gradually increase your meditation time. Sit up straight and stay comfortable by resting your bum on a folded blanket. Its difficult at first to sit still but just know that you will reap the benefits soon enough. Just like anything it takes time.

#2 Breathe

Just as in yoga, breath is important in meditation. Using breathing exercising helps you get into a more relaxed state. Focus your attention on your belly with every inhale and exhale (feel it expand and deflate as you breath). Try inhaling slowly to a count of three. Then hold your breath for a count of three at the top of your inhale. Exhale for three counts. Once you get used to this style of breathing, increase your counts and hold the breath longer. Using your breath helps keep you focused and more aware. During sex, your breath can help you feel more aware and present. When you are relaxed and your mind is settled you can more easily orgasm.

#3 Personal mantra

If counting your breath isn't helping you relax and focus, try a mantra or a combo of both! A mantra is a sacred word or phrase that you can speak aloud or with the voice in your head. Also, try imagining a peaceful place in your mind. Focus on this calm place, and let your mind go there. Focusing on your breath, mantra or image will greatly help you in reaching your personal peace. Need help developing your mantra?  Get started with "Om" which is the classic and sacred sound of Hinduism.

#4 Clear your mind

When your mind begins to wander, non-judgmentally push those thoughts aside without labeling them "good" or "bad" and come back to your breath count, mantra or image. Silencing your mind is the pinnacle of mediation. Meditation is a journey, so just take it all in! When thoughts do enter your mind, and they will, impartially observe them and gently push them away until silence returns.  Eventually you will be able to control your thoughts!

Meditation brings about concentration, knowledge of self, better health, and helps us stay in the present and worry less about the past and future. Think about it. During sex, if you can concentrate more, detach your mind from disruptive thoughts, and relax, orgasming is just around the corner! So start "oming" to start having that big "O"!

Ladies! 3 Surprising Types of Orgasms

Orgasm October has been teaching us so much already! We have already gone over six orgasms so far during this sexy month: clitoral, vaginal, mentalU-spot, A-spot and breast orgasms. We couldn't leave you hanging. So we are back with even more types of orgasms that the female body is capable of experiencing! How could we possibly have three more orgasms to share you ask? Well, ladies our bodies are that amazing and beautiful! Our Lora Swarts reports.

* * *

#1 Skin or (zone)

The skin orgasm can be brought about by massaging or touching parts of the body that are not directly related to the sexual nervous system (back of the neck, inside of the thigh and lower back).

Women can absolutely experience orgasm from a simple massage, or any stimulus to the skin because it brings on a relaxed state. If you aren't fully orgasming from this stimulation, don't worry! Touching is still amazing foreplay. Make it better by using a blindfold! Not knowing where his lips are headed is truly teasing and orgasmic.

Have you ever had an skin orgasm? Do leave a comment below!

#2 Anal

Women can experience orgasms from anal stimulation! According to The Journal of Sexual Medicine, women who orgasmed vaginally in their last sexual encounter was 65 percent. On the other hand, women who orgasmed from oral sex was 81% and women who orgasmed anally was 94%! Yeah, we were surprised, too. Check out the study here (pages 357-358). Maybe that's why women are more into anal than before or at least giving it a try.

For example, Marie Claire asked in 2011, "Is Anal the New Oral?" Quite possibly, yes! Dr. Jenn already given us advice on how to give better anal pleasure. But if you are totally new to anal pleasure, check out our anal sex mini-guide for couples! Don't forget about communication with anal sex (and all forms of new sexual activity). Also, we do recommend doucheing inside your anus and (rectum) for both men and women--before anal sex. Also, anal can be scary or nerve-racking for some women. So ask first, use a lubricant and go very slowly.

Do you have anal tips or tricks? Do leave them below!

#3 Oral or mouth

Women who are sensitive orally can experience an oral or mouth orgasm. Kissing, licking, sucking, gently nibbling and even oral sex contribute to the mouth orgasm.

This type of orgasm can be described as beginning in the lips. Then, the orgasm spreads from the mouth to the genitals and then all over the body. Start with lots of foreplay! Making out is simple but can really send blood flowing to all over your body!

Touch-Free Orgasm: My Personal Story

Since it's Orgasm October, we're talking especially about orgasms of all kinds. To be sure, we love orgasms of all kinds (take a clitoral or g-spot orgasm for). Especially, what we've talked about before; hands-free, mental or 'thinking off' orgasms. So let's get personal. Monica Day of the Sensual Life is here to talk about her experience of actually having a hands-free orgasm.

* * *

The strangest thing happened to me yesterday. I’m almost embarrassed to tell you, but once you see what it is, you’ll know why I had to.

After spending five hours waiting for Pep Boys to fix my blown-out tire and five days of rather intense relating with someone I am in a significant relationship with, I finally got on the road from NYC back to Philadelphia to pull the Mommy portion of my week.

Between the time it took me to get from Long Island City to the Verrazano Bridge, I’d had a full-up orgasm. While driving, no less. And hadn’t put my hands anywhere near my genitals, or any other part of my body for that matter! For a moment, I feared I might still be in the grips of it when I hit the toll booth. And wondered how I would navigate paying the toll while in climax!

After marveling at this phenomenon, and making a phone call to share it with said significant person, I continued along my merry way. Until around exit 7A. Guess what? Yup, another one. Bigger, stronger, longer, and wetter this time. Truly amazed, and with a little embarrassment even, I pull over to change my now uncomfortably wet jeans and catch my breath for a minute.

How did this happen?

Strangely enough, it all started with feelings of jealousy. Someone I have been intimate with for the last two years is now in an intimate relationship with someone else. Just minutes before I got in the car, I learned they had been sexual together the night before.

Now, this isn’t exactly a Tiger Woods kind of event. We have always had an open relationship, and it is more open now than ever. But there were a few wrinkles to the scenario this particular night that made it very tempting to go into a downward spiral of loss, betrayal and jealousy.

So, I’m driving along and tossing it around in my mind. Giving myself space to see how I really feel about it. When suddenly, my body starts having a very different reaction than my mind! I simply can’t hold onto the jealousy. Instead, I start imagining them together. Thinking of what they must do, how it must be between them. Then, I start to imagine myself included, rather than excluded, in the scene. And, well, you already know how the story ends.

Of course, I’m tempted to keep all this to myself. It seems, even for me, somehow too private and odd to share in this forum. And yet, I can’t help thinking there is potential for a serious revolution in relating to grow out of this odd little road trip of mine.

Female Orgasm: the Essential Foreplay (NSFW)

It's Orgasm October. Didn't you know? There have been several questions from our gentlemen readers about why female orgasm is an essential foreplay activity. We also recently shared a picture on Facebook proclaiming, "A gentlemen knows it's good manners to eat pussy." With around 50% more 'Likes' than usual, our spidy-sense started tingling.

Let's talk more about female orgasm and that ever-so-important activity of foreplay. Tia Champagne is here again to talk about why foreplay is essential, including the female orgasm.

* * *

So far, we’ve talked about vulva, penis, foreskin and breasts, oh my! Now that we know what they do and why, we can talk a little bit about why we actually care: orgasms. We want orgasms. Me, you, the short guy down sitting across from you, and the chubby, fine young lady sitting next to you (who very possibly, could be me). We want orgasms and we want them NOW.

So let’s talk about what they are from a physical perspective and how we can get them. Now, tomorrow, and for always. It's time for talk of the female orgasm.

What is the female orgasm?

Orgasm (from Greek οργασμός orgasmos, from organ to mature, swell, also sexual climax) is the sudden discharge of accumulated sexual tension during the sexual response cycle, resulting in rhythmic muscular contractions in the pelvic region characterized by an intense sensation of pleasure. For women, there are rhythmic muscular contractions that produce stimulation and pleasure, which is considered an orgasm. Now, an orgasm is not a nod or shake of the head type of good feeling.

It’s usually a “I don't hear you. And even if I could, I don’t care what you’re saying—OMG,” type of good feeling. While experiencing an orgasm, usually women feel different surges of pleasure coming from the clitoris, the labia minora, majora, and the vaginal hole itself. The difference between a great sensation and an actual orgasm is the contractions—your vaginal lips pulsating and secreting vaginal fluids and cum.

Now, the G-Spot is a controversial part of the woman’s vagina because some people believe it exists while others don’t. For those of us who do, an orgasm from the G-Spot could be even more powerful and sexually satisfying than the clitoral one. Some women don’t notice, some like a combination, and others have their preference between the two. Honestly, all are great and all are welcome with open legs.

Why foreplay is essential

For most, foreplay (including cunnilingus) is a great way to reach orgasm because of erogenous zones. Around 75% of women don't achieve orgasms during sexual intercourse alone. For women, the vulva and clitoris are the most sensitive erogenous zones and best areas to stimulate during foreplay. Erogenous, and Eros comes from the Greek word, ἔρως , and genous comes from the Greek word born. I’m almost positive that we need a lot more than touching to create love, but foreplay is a fun start.

Erogenous zones are areas of the body that are sensitive to touch and create arousal. For some, a scalp massage can be a huge turn on because there are sensitive parts of the head that could be pleasurable. Other common erogenous zones include the neck (purr), the clavicle, feet, ears, breasts, stomach, and pubic bone. Find more about his erogenous zones here.

I mean, really, any body part can be an erogenous zone depending on the person. Go ahead and research. Touch his (or her) Achilles heel and let me know how it goes. I’d love to hear from you. Comments/questions/concerns/fantasies—I’d love to hear them and I'll be giving more advice along the way. Stay tuned for my next posts and even more advice for GetLusty for Couples!

Why My Morning Orgasm Is Better Than Coffee

Orgasm October has us thinking about orgasms constantly. And this lazy Saturday morning, we're thinking about coffee and orgasms both. Well, it's morning in Chicago at least. What better time for a cup of coffee? But have you ever considered morning orgasms replacing coffee occasionally? Yes, it's possible. Dr. Carlen Costa reports.

* * *

An orgasm in the morning is better than coffee. That’s what I always say. No matter I don't drink coffee!

Today, I am inspired by orgasms. I’m in San Francisco - the city where food is a delicacy and so is sex. People here take their sexuality very seriously, and why shouldn’t they? We are consistently plagued with variably negative, closed-minded and overt in-your-face messages in reference to our genders and sexualities.  It’s nice to be able to find a safe haven for those who identify themselves in sex positivity and allow themselves to just be (at least this has consistently been my experience coming here).

So why the orgasm?

I started my day with a lecture from the man who invented the Discostick(R). He came up with the idea when his wife was having concerns climaxing and experiencing pain. The percussive source instrument’s claim to fame is that its vibrations have been known to aid in reducing vaginal adhesions (scarring) from surgeries in women such as C-sections, hysterectomies, or repeated abdominal incisions. As mentioned, the percussive vibrations stimulate and loosen lower tendons and ligaments while also supplying a rather pleasurable massage above and below the pubic bone. The also fortunate result happens to be an orgasm! Which, let’s be honest, is amazing!

This got me thinking about orgasms. Vibrator therapy administered by doctors of the past to women were almost daily requirements in order to ‘rid women’ of ‘sickness’ such as deviancy and mania. Some women were even known to self pleasure before big events, attending church and other social gatherings. Why? In order to give them pleasing dispositions and a healthy glow.

Bring back the orgasm

You know, they may have been on to something there. Think about it. After you orgasm, either through self pleasuring or from your partner, doesn’t your day just feel so much better? Doesn’t everything just look pretty awesome? Yeah it does! So let’s talk about this; orgasms make you feel awesome, make your day better-even in that moment, and increase your sexual self esteem.

Why aren’t we having orgasm parties? Why is there still such shame associated with women’s sexuality? Why do many people still feel guilty after self pleasuring? You know what I say to that? F**K that! Literally. There are plenty of benefits and reasons for her to masturbate. There are also great reasons why he should masturbate.

Masturbate

Make yourself some private time right now and masturbate! Or grab your partner and get jiggy, or the guy next door, maybe that girl that keeps lightly teasing you with her eyes as you’re reading this. This is a great time to get it on!

I was also able to meet someone really interesting today too. Dr. Amy Cooper is the bomb shell who wrote the book "The Everything Orgasm Book". Her book discusses everything from myths about orgasms, enhancing your orgasm experiences to 10 ways to improve your orgasm. One of the most interesting things that sparked much discussion was when she said, "If you want deeper orgasms, explore ways to do that. But don’t go against the orgasms you’re having now." Everyone wants earth shattering, mind blowing, wake up the neighbors, final act of the opera orgasms. Of course we do! The orgasm is so great it allows us to feel like we’ve slipped into temporary bliss. Everything in the world disappears for a few seconds and you get to be in your own little pleasure bubble floating around ecstasy land.

Not all orgasms are created equal

The key to a positive life of fulfilling orgasms though is variance. Think of orgasms like chocolate. Sometimes you like a little peanut & nuget, or a little milk chocolate, then there are days when you’re just dying to have a truffle. OK, maybe 4 truffles. But that the best part! That’s OK! Orgasmic variance is what makes discovering your sexual patterns part of the fun. Exploring what feels good, mixing it up, and having different orgasmic goals is all part of the idea of the “evolving orgasm”. No one wants to stay stagnant. Our civilization feeds on change and evolution and progression to become something more and our sexuality does as well, which including our orgasms. So here’s my sexy tip:

Take your orgasm into your own hands

Be confident in your sexuality and the fact that you - yes you, deserve wonderful orgasms as much as the next person. Self pleasuring (aka masturbation) is probably the most reliable source as you really only have to deal with yourself. Incorporate fantasy, toys, lubes, varying partners, techniques, textures, light some incense or bath in a scented oils, varying positions, speeds, times of the day. The list can go on and on! Play with your clitoris, G Spot, anus, prostate, testes, nipples and all the other erogenous zones. Not sure where they are? Explore!

Either way, set yourself a goal and work up to it. Don’t get discouraged if the missions fails the first time. Your personal orgasmic recipe is individual and varies based on numerous factors. Just have fun with it though. This is supposed to be a bonding exercise for yourself with yourself.

Love yourself, and let your orgasms love you.
